  1. The 9,900 acre (40 sq km) Higgins Lake in Roscommon County, Michigan, has a 21-mi (34-km) shoreline and is up to 135 ft (41 m) deep. North Higgins Lake State Park is on what was once the world's largest seedling nursery, developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. To the Chippewa the lake was known as Majinabeesh ("sparkling water") but on 26 January 1837, the same day Michigan was admitted as a state, a bill was introduced and approved to conduct a geological survey under Douglass Houghton. In March 1838 the survey was divided into four departments (geological and mineralogical, zoological, botanical, and topographical), each headed by a specialist under Houghton's direction; the lake was then renamed after the first chief of the topographical department, Sylvester Higgins.
