Bradley Mason Hamlin writes

Edge of Wheel

the other day
I watched a woman
throw
a plastic
drinking straw

out
the window
of her Camry

after
almost
clipping me
with
her car

her hair
held
up
super tight
with a
synthetic claw

one hand
holding
a smoking cigarette
the other
clutching a squawking
cell phone

how
the hell
she was driving …

I just
didn’t know

maybe,
the kid
riding next to her
had her hand
on the edge of wheel
or maybe
she’s using elbows
to work it
out

either way
the pedestrian
lady
she almost
nailed
in the parking
lot

didn’t seem
to notice
or miss a beat
pushing
her grocery
cart

distracted
by
her own vices.

  1. Camry is an Anglicized phonetic transcription of the Japanese word "kanmuri" (crown), in line with the Toyota tradition of using variations of the "crown" name starting with the Toyota Crown (1955) and continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966), the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown, " and the Toyota Tiara (1960). The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew, and the rebranded Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991) was named after a royal accessory to a crown. Toyota introduced the Camri in 1982, although the manufacturer had also used the name (the Celica Camry) for an unrelated four-door sedan in 1980.
