Vatsala Radhakeesoon writes

Favourite Singer
(for Roch Voisine)

Blessed with uniqueness is your voice,
To my ears, it’s the mysticism of cool sea;
Your lyrics sad, happy, profound, funny
on my musical ladder shine as first choice.

During my teens, on my room walls you smiled,

To my locked girlish diary you often flew and said ‘Hi!’
Your songs in the morning breeze met my poems shy
and you became my gentle muse, my artistic guide.
Swiftly have the years flown
but amidst my Poetry’s sun
to your songs on You Tube I  still turn,
I sing along with you ‘ L’idole,’ ‘Bye-Bye’ and ‘Helen,'
I’m all thrilled with ‘Forever Gentlemen.’

O Favourite singer!

To my mind, soul , heart will speak your songs forever
Your fan fidèle* I will be forever.

* fidele (from French): loyal, sincere

  1. Roch Voisine is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actor, and radio and television host who performs in English and French. His musical breakthrough was his 1989 album “Hélène,” which sold three million copies in Quebec, France, Belgium, and Switzerland and named Best Album prize at the Victoires de la Musique, annually awarded by the Ministère de la Culture to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry, based on the vote of a large panel of professionals (40% of whom are performers, musicians, writers, composers; 40% production professionals, and 20% music associates such as agents, distributors, music critics, and radio programmers). He followed up in 1990 with “Double,” with all French songs on one CD and all English ones on the other. In 1992, at 28, he became the youngest Chevalier of the l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, established by the Ministère de la Culture in 1957 as an artistic revival of the Ordre de Saint-Michel established by Louis XI in 1469, abolished by Louis XVI in 1790, revived by Louis XVIII in 1816 (though no new knights were added), and abolished again in 1830; originally intended as a mark of aristocracy, from the 17th century .it became an order of civil merit to honor artists, architects, and writers. His English breakthrough was 1993’s “I'll Always Be There.” In 1994 he won the Juno Award for Male Vocalist of the Year and in 1995 was made an Officer of the Order of Canada (Ordre du Canada), established in 1967 to recognize distinguished service; only the Order of Merit, the personal gift by the monarch, has higher status; appointees are recommended by an advisory board and formally inducted by the monarch (or, usually, the governor general). From 2008 to 2010, he hosted “Americana,” a TV series recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, that paid tribute to American popular and country music.

And I love you so, the people ask me how
How I've lived till now, I tell them I don't know.
I guess they understand how lonely life has been
But life began again the day you took my hand.

And yes, I know how lonely life can be.
The shadows follow me and the night won't set me free.
But I don't let the evening get me down now that you're around me.

And you love me too, your thoughts are just for me
You set my spirit free, I'm happy that you do.
The book of life is brief and once a page is read
All but love is dead, that is my belief.

And yes, I know how lonely life can be.
The shadows follow me and the night won't set me free.
But I don't let the evening get me down now that you're around me.

And I love you so, the people ask me how
How I've lived till now, I tell them I don't know.
