Blow Your Raspberry

  1. Blowing a raspberry (or strawberry) is "making a Bronx cheer," an unvoiced linguolabial trill (in technical terminology) that produces a loud, fartlike sound by placing the tongue between the lips and blowing. It is intended to show derision. It may be called a raspberry, rasp, or razz, and comes from Cockney slang which playfully uses the non-rhyming part of a rhyming phrase as a synonym ("raspberry tart" rhymes with "fart") that first appeared in print in 1890. "Bedazzled" was a 1967 film written by its stars, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (directed and produced by Stanley Donen), and was t was remade in 2000 by Harold Ramis, starring Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley. Stanley Moon (Moore) is helplessly infatuated with a fellow worker at a Wimpy's restaurant in London. In despair he tries to kill himself but is interrupted by George Spiggott (Cook), actually the Devil, who is in a contest with God to be the first to acquire 100 billion souls. To recruit Stanley, he offers him seven wishes. Stanley uses all of them to win the waitress' love, but each time Spiggott deliberately finds some loophole in the wish frustrate his desire. Whenever the wish is going awry (as it inevitably always does), Moon is instructed to "Blow your raspberry, Stanley!" and he will be removed from the embarrassing situation so he begin on the next wish. In the end, of course, the Devil fails and curses God: "All right, you great git, you've asked for it. I'll cover the world in Tastee-Freez and Wimpy Burgers. I'll fill it full of concrete runways, motorways, aircraft, television and automobiles, advertising, plastic flowers and frozen food, supersonic bangs. I'll make it so noisy and disgusting that even you'll be ashamed of yourself."

(I guess the Devil won after all....)
