Paulette Spescha-Montibert writes

Mother tongue

Mother and I
were alone
it was Summer time
in the kitchen
Through a chink
in the shutters
mother was pointing out
a shabby geranium
lying desperate
under the lilac
then she filled
a bowl with water
precious water
drawn at the fountain
and she sent me
to rescue the cripple
Very slowly I went
but ran back
the Sun pouring
hot lead on my head
I entered blind
the freshness of the kitchen

to join my mother
and watch
a miracle
the leaves of the geranium
getting up one by one
My mother said
look he was thirsty
he is drinking now
