Austin Belanger writes

Hindsight

Hindsight is never twenty twenty,
It's out of focus and the view is blocked or skewed,
Rose colored glasses cloud the distortion,
Make us see merrier moments among a sea of sadness,
Or the opposite,
Depending upon your lens.

Hindsight is never twenty twenty,
It stings with the tears of pain,
Memories that burn down deep in the soul,
Like scar of a long gone fire,
Whose embers still scorch the skin,
Just below the surface,

Hindsight is never twenty twenty,
It's what the soul wants to see,
When the reality of the past is too painful to grasp,
Or the loss of what was once so joyful,
Is too painful to bear.

Hindsight looks behind,
When we face forward for a reason,
Time goes on,
Our memories become our new reality,
Happiness or sadness is our choice,
We choose what lens we use,
But all things come in their season,
Not matter how we receive them.

We can live in the shadow of our ghosts,
Weep for those we lose along the way,
Or smile and remember gladly,
All they gave us...
How they guided our path...

For we came not to this moment,
Without the anger and the pain,
Without the losses and the gain,
Without smiles and laughter light,
Or tears cried out of sight,
We walked without foreknowledge,
Of where our steps have led,
And hindsight cannot change this place,
Our privilege now to tread.

  1. 20/20" means "perfect vision." Optometrists use two numbers to measure people's vision. If the first number is low,the vision is good; if it's high, it isn't. 20/20 is the lowest score and means that one can see see perfectly. (200/20 would mean that at 20 feet distance things would look as clear as though they are 200 feet away; a 10/20 score would indicate better than normal vision.) Hence, the expression "hindsight is 20/20" -- we can see the past clearly, implying that our perception of the present or future is less clear. Austin reverses that common expression.
