Keith Francese writes

jann was racing today

jann was racing today
and he kept scraping the rail

in the same spot of the same turn
on every lap

the metal on metal sent a tail
of sparks wagging wildly

into the air where it
dissipated into the screaming crowd

they kept expecting him
to take the turn a little earlier

or at a slightly slower speed,
but he never did

he must have been fine with it

  1. I received this on May 20 but do not know when it was written. It may be a pointed bit of journalism, or it may have been prophetic. But almost two months earlier, during the VLN Endurance Championship at Nurburgring Nordschleife. Jann Mardenborough flipped upright, went airborne for some 30 meters, hit a safety barrier, flipped over the four-meter debris fence, and landed on its roof amid spectators. One fan was was killed and others injured in the crash.

  2. The bane of all hare-brained writers. Mistakes happen, especially in the rewriting process. And studies show that they occur much more frequently on a wordprocessor than on a printed page. For some reason our little pea brains aren't as adept at policing computer typo idiocy as print stupidity. In any case, clearly Jann Mardenborough did not do any of the alleged activities, his car did!
